Project Overview

One Liner: MechaBrew is a gravity powered and electricity free coffee maker that brews using K-Cup pods with less cost, complexity, and headache than traditional coffee machines.

Abstract

Single-serve coffee brewing systems have become important to modern consumer culture because of their speed, convenience, and consistency. Electric pod-based machines are the most prominent type of single-serve coffee brewing systems, yet they’re usually very expensive and rely on integrated heaters, pumps, and internal tubing to create pressurized flow. These electromechanical components are prone to mineral buildup, clogging, and mechanical failure. This often results in costly repairs or replacements with a pretty short lifespan. Although manual brewing devices eliminate electrical components and reduce points of failure, they require loose grounds and filters, making them incompatible with standardized K-Cup-style capsules. While prior designs have focused either on electrically powered pod brewers or fully manual ground-coffee systems, little work has been done on a completely mechanical device that is still compatible with single-serve capsules. This causes consumers to choose between convenience and long-term durability. This highlights the need for a gravity-driven, electricity-free brewing system that preserves pod compatibility while reducing cost and mechanical complexity. MechaBrew is a non-electric, gravity-powered coffee maker intended to brew a 12-ounce cup using standard K- Cup pods. The device uses a hinged multi-needle puncture mechanism and a stainless-steel reservoir to regulate water flow without pumps or heaters. Concept development was done by SolidWorks modeling and a weighted decision matrix that prioritized safety, manufacturability, and reliability. By eliminating failure-prone electrical components while retaining pod convenience, MechaBrew demonstrates a durable, cost-conscious, and sustainable alternative to conventional single-serve coffee machines.
