Hard Hat Impact Detector
Project Overview
One Liner: Our project is developing a low-cost smart hard hat attachment that uses real-time impact detection, GPS tracking, and LoRaWAN communication to improve worker safety and emergency response on construction sites.
Construction is one of the most hazardous industries in the world, with head injuries accounting for a significant portion of workplace injuries. Modern day hard hats primarily provide passive protection, lacking active feedback or monitoring to detect when an event occurs. This limits their ability for incidence analysis as it does not provide any data to try to avoid future accidents. While there are existing “smart” hard hats in the field that offer live data and location tracking, the sensors are often built into the hard hat which require full replacement if the hard hat sustains any damage. These “smart” hard hats also require base stations to be set up around the area increasing deployment cost and time. Because of this, it is difficult for companies to replace existing hard hats due to factors such as cost and replacing hard hats that are up to standards. This project presents a low-cost, smart, modular hard hat sensor that can be attached to an existing hard hat. The sensor provides real-time safety and record incidents to recognize patterns and prevent similar incidents in the field. This system uses a microcontroller with IMU-based impact and fall detection as well as a GPS module for location tracking, transmitting live alerts, and telemetry to a remote dashboard through LoRaWAN. These devices are housed in a modular 3D-printed enclosure allowing for replacement of damaged hard hats without the need to replace the sensing hardware. This design provides a scalable, low-cost foundation for PPE, enabling faster incidence response and data-driven safety management in an environment that requires field work.
