021 - FreshSense IoT
Project Overview
One Liner: An IoT-based environmental monitoring and analytics platform for detecting storage condition anomalies, spoilage risks, and equipment failures in controlled environments.
FreshSense IoT is an IoT-based environmental monitoring and analytics platform designed to detect abnormal storage conditions, potential spoilage risks, and equipment failures. The project will use a refrigerator-based prototype as a proof-of-concept to demonstrate how embedded sensors and data analytics can continuously monitor a controlled storage environment.
The system will integrate an ESP32-based embedded platform with temperature and environmental gas sensors to collect real-time environmental data. Sensor readings will be transmitted, stored, and analyzed to identify changes and abnormal patterns. The platform will provide historical data reporting, trend visualization, and alerts when environmental conditions exceed defined thresholds or demonstrate unusual behavior.
The team will conduct controlled experiments using different storage conditions and food items to collect and compare sensor data. The collected data will be analyzed to evaluate detection accuracy, response time, sensor reliability, and overall system effectiveness in identifying abnormal environmental conditions. A cardboard refrigerator prototype will be constructed to provide a controlled environment for sensor placement and testing.
Although the refrigerator will serve as the primary proof-of-concept, FreshSense IoT will be designed as an extensible monitoring platform that could be adapted to other controlled environments, including food storage, pharmaceuticals, laboratories, artwork preservation, and wine storage. The final system will include the embedded monitoring hardware, data collection and analytics software, a user-facing dashboard, testing and evaluation results, technical documentation, and a demonstration of the completed prototype.
