Project Overview

One Liner: Measured Correction. Mechanical Confidence

Abstract

Medializing calcaneal osteotomy is widely used surgical procedure for correcting flat-foot deformities and restoring hindfoot alignment, where the accuracy of medial displacement plays a critical role in long-term patient outcomes. Although the procedure is well established, surgeons currently lack a tool that allows precise, measurable control of calcaneal translation during surgery, often relying on visual estimation and repeated intraoperative fluoroscopy. This reliance introduces variability, increases operative time, and raises the risk of under or over correction. The objective of this project is to develop a mechanically guided device that enables controlled, repeatable medial displacement while maintaining alignment throughout the procedure. To address this need, multiple design concepts were explored and evaluated based on stability, surgical compatibility, and mechanical feasibility. The resulting design employs a compact, threaded displacement mechanism that provides smooth, incremental translation while remaining fully engaged across its range of motion. The device is designed to integrate within a minimally invasive surgical workflow and emphasizes simplicity, durability, and ease of sterilization through a purely mechanical architecture. Design development is supported through CAD modeling, motion visualization, and structural simulation to verify mechanical performance and reliability under expected surgical loads. By providing surgeons with a direct and quantifiable method for controlling medial displacement, this project aims to improve consistency in surgical outcomes, reduce dependence on subjective judgment, and enhance procedural efficiency during medializing calcaneal osteotomy.
