066 - Injury Prevention
Project Overview
One Liner: One-liner: This project aims to prevent injuries in workers by utilizing Computer Vision and Biomechanics to estimate forces on people joints to detect how likely it is that an injury will occur in the future.
We want to prevent injuries on the job site and stop them before they happen. Thousands of people suffer preventable injuries each year on the job site, and we want to make it so that they stay safe and potentially help employers save money on worker’s compensation and other associated health costs.
Our project will use biomechanical data and computer vision to create a model which can estimate the forces that are applied to certain joints to detect areas where injury is likely and to project the likelihood of an injury to that ligament in the future. In particular, we want to start by looking at the most preventable injuries, such as elbow injuries, as a 10 Nm increase in elbow varus torque, the primary source of elbow injuries, corresponds to a 26% increase in the likelihood of an elbow injury [1]. This is something we can accurately calculate and use to determine if injury is likely in the future.
We hope to use this model to reduce the likelihood of injury by examining how different actions affect the human body and their corresponding likelihood with injury. This will enable people to live healthier lives and allow the world to become a safer place.
