Motionbase real-time telemetry translator to expand usage of Drexel's motion simulator, The Voyager

Abstract:

A new real time system to convert data from NoLimits2, a rollercoaster building software, to the proprietary black-box motion control system.

Description:

The Voyager motion simulation platform is a device that simulates a real motion environment for riders with the use of 2.5-ton hydraulics. The device has three degrees of freedom and a two-seat cockpit with a projector screen. The system allows for images to be displayed on the screen and the movements on-screen to be felt believably by the riders. Drexel University’s main building houses a Voyager device, though its integration with modern software is limited. No Limits 2 is a roller coaster “build ‘n ride” software that generates live telemetry data and visuals from user-built virtual coasters. There is no automated interface between No Limits 2 and the Voyager system to simulate the feeling of being on these user-built coasters. The Motion Simulator Revitalization application provides a real-time tool to translate raw telemetry data from No Limits 2 into a structure that is usable by the Voyager system. The result is a realistic simulation of riding a user-built roller coaster, creating the illusion that the passenger is actually riding the coaster.
